Patients with geriatric fractures have an increased possibility of experiencing complications before and after surgery due to having severe underlying conditions such as heart or respiratory diseases. Therefore, treatment of geriatric fractures requires promptness and highly skilled medical care. Also, it is known that performing surgery within 24 – 48 hours after the onset of the fracture results in a good prognosis.

Accordingly, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital opened the Geriatric Fracture Center for the first time in the region in 2017 and set up a system that prioritizes pre-operative examinations and collaborates with related clinical departments. This system enables the center to provide prompt and efficient care for fracture patients over 65. It also ensures the patients receive adequate care, including surgery at an early stage.

A specialized surgical team dedicated to geriatric fractures consisting of professional staff from orthopedic surgery, anesthesiology and pain clinic, surgical nurses, and other support staff members provides highly advanced surgery based on rich experience and surgical skills.

In addition, the Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital Geriatric Fracture Center is focusing its efforts on post-surgical rehabilitation to ensure rapid recovery and return to daily life. Also, trauma specialists and specialized nurses provide fall prevention education, treatment and management of osteoporosis, and continuous rehabilitation programs to prevent secondary fracture and enable early movement resulting in fast recovery and return to daily life.
